Workers to Atlanta council: Raises are overdue

ATLANTA -- A hundred public safety employees, their families and other backers, started the day outside city hall-loudly making a point about their city salaries.

"He's bringing home less than ever," said Kelly Uhlis, the wife of an Atlanta police sergeant. She and other raise-backers say city workers gave back five percent of their salaries at the start of Mayor Reed's administration in the name of pension reform. Now they want it back-and more than Reed is offering.

"To suggest a one percent pay raise is absolutely infuriating," said Sgt. Carrie Mills, a retired Atlanta police officer who now works part time for the city. "What is a one percent pay raise? It's a happy meal! Every two weeks. A happy meal!"

By midafternoon, many of them were packing into the city council chamber. But it wasn't just public safety employees.

Fulton County Schools see graduation rates on steady rise

FULTON COUNTY -- In 2012-2013 school year, the Fulton County School System saw an increase in graduation rates, continued from a 2011 rise.

In 2011, seniors had a 70.1 percent graduation rate, followed by 71.3 percent for 2013, a spokeswoman for Fulton County Schools reported. Throughout the schools, nine saw the rise in rates. Roswell High School was among the top with a 12-point jump.

"It's great that 71 percent of our students are successfully finishing high school, but that also means more than a quarter of our students are being left behind," Superintendent Robert Avossa said. "One of our strategic focuses is to increase graduation rates to 90 percent by 2017."

Avossa pointed out that support from parents and the community are key helpers to achieve Fulton County's graduation goal.
