Fulton County Cooperative Extension participates in Pizza Farm 2013

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition.

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store. The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

Chipotle offers BOGO special for teachers

ATLANTA -- Chipotle Mexican Grill is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day by offering buy-one-get-one menu items for educators.

On Tuesday, May 7, a teacher who shows a valid school ID at any U.S. Chipotle restaurant will receive a free burrito, burrito bowl, salad or order of tacos when they buy another menu item.

The promotion is available from 4 p.m. to close.

"We are changing the way people think about and eat fast food. This means going beyond our commitment to better food from more sustainable ingredients and working hard to engrain our restaurants in the communities that they serve," Chipotle communications director Chris Arnold said in a statement. "Connecting with educators and other key community groups is part of who we are, and we're always happy when our work makes an impact upon the communities where we operate."

All Georgia patrols to crack down on drunk driving, speeding

(WXIA) -- Summer 2013, as reported by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, makes ten years in a row that police are bumping up the number of patrols throughout Georgia - to crack down on dangerous driving.

Katie Fallon, spokeswoman for the GOHS said the boost in patrol is part of the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic) campaign. It is a strategy in which all jurisdictions of highway safety enforcement work to reduce aggressive, high-speed travel and driving under the influence. During the summer months, accidents happen from these two bad driving habits.

"Temperatures won't be the only thing making the heat rise this summer," Director Harris Blackwood said. "From drunk drivers to aggressive speeders, all unsafe motorists will be feeling the H.E.A.T."

Has APS helped students affected by CRCT scandal?

ATLANTA -- All the attention on the courtroom should not distract from what's happening in the classroom.

We dug into the question: what is being done for the students affected by the Atlanta Public Schools CRCT cheating scandal, specifically those students who moved onto the next grade because their tests were changed?

Immediately after the scandal became a national story, outgoing APS school board chairperson Khaatim Sherrer El said the following: "I have failed to protect thousands of children ... children who come from homes like mine."

He was in tears as he said it.

The APS board and its new superintendent, Erroll Davis, vowed then to provide aid to the students who had wrongly advanced to the next grade. In the months that followed, they earmarked roughly 5500 children, but they struggled to pinpoint all of them.

"Therefore," said Davis several months later, "we have decided to cast a much wider net."

Roswell teen scores role in Jackie Robinson biopic, "42"

ROSWELL, Ga. -- It is slated to be one of the biggest movie hits of the year.

42 is the story of Jackie Robinson and his remarkable life 66 years ago when he became the first African-American to break the so-called "color line" of Major League Baseball.

And 13-year-old Henry Friedman from Roswell has made a name for himself in the movie.

The Friedman family has lived in Atlanta for generations.

You might best know the last name from the world famous Friedman's shoe store downtown that has catered to athletes from all over the planet.

Grandfather Friedman sold the store in the 1950's but the name has remained.

Now in 2013, there is another famous Friedman making his mark here.

"When I was little, my grandparents' house I would get my brother and cousin and we would put up magic shows," Henry said.

14 students awarded Gates Millennium scholarships

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Public Schools officials say 14 students have each been awarded Gates Millennium Scholarships.

The scholarship program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and selects 1,000 high school students from minority backgrounds annually to receive scholarships to fund their undergraduate education.

Decatur Green Fest returns to Old Courthouse Square

DECATUR, Ga. -- The Decatur Green Fest is happening for the fifth time on Saturday, May 11 at the Old Courthouse Square.

In 2012, over 5,000 attended the event. For 2013, proceeds will go to Dogwood Alliance and Poverty is Real. Entertainment lined up include live concerts, spirits and local food tasting, local vendors, an Artists Market and activities for kids.

Ed Roland, formerly of Collective Soul and Atlanta native will headline the fest's music. He will take the stage from 7:00 - 9:30, while the fest runs from 3:00 Saturday afternoon until 10:00 Saturday night.
