11Alive helps Smart Lunch, Smart Kid

ATLANTA -- 11Alive News employees rolled up their sleeves Wednesday morning and assembled 400 bagged lunches for children in need.

This is the second year 11Alive has helped Action Ministries' Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program.

Smart Lunch, Smart Kid provides nutritious meals in the summertime for children who normally rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year.

WellCare and Gas South employees joined the 11Alive team in making sandwiches and putting together lunch bags. Each Smart Lunch, Smart Kid meal consists of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, fruit snacks and a bottle of water.

Action Ministries hopes to feed at least 200,000 children across north Georgia through the 2013 Smart Lunch, Smart Kid outreach.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension participates in Pizza Farm 2013

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition.

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store. The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

Stan Watson hosts DeKalb Community Cabinet Breakfast

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Commissioner Stan Watson's DeKalb Community Cabinet Breakfast is scheduled for Saturday at Chapel Hill Middle School.

The breakfast will run from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. For May, several guests are attending, including MARTA CEO and GM Keith Parker, Chief Cedric Alexander of the DCPD, Delores Crowell, Regional Manager of External Affairs for AT&T, and Debra Moss, Manager and Customer Relations of the Atlanta Gas Light Company.

The Black Top Circus will also give a special performance.

Chapel Hill Middle is located at 3535 Dogwood Farms Road in Decatur.

Commissioner Watson holds the breakfasts to join officials and the community. The breakfast is free to attend and open to the public.

Atlanta: America's nerdiest city

ATLANTA -- Meredith Placko's closet isn't about clothes. Instead, it's about an identity. The racks contain many of the essential ingredients for a life she lives proudly as a nerd.

"The whole world is kind of embracing the geek chic concept," said Placko, a blogger and freelance TV producer.

It starts with Dragon*Con, the annual downtown Atlanta sci-fi nerdfest that cinched Placko's decision to move here from south Florida three years ago. Dragon*Con helped vault Atlanta to the top of a list of America's nerdiest cities, according to a real estate site.

The Nun Dash: All invited to Guinness World Record attempt at Spring Festival on Ponce

ATLANTA — In celebration of the upcoming Atlanta engagement of SISTER ACT THE MUSICAL at the Fox Theatre, Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta and The Festival on Ponce have teamed up to present The Nun Dash. The run will benefit CURE Childhood Cancer in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most people dressed as nuns. The Nun Dash will take place at the Spring Festival on Ponce on April 13, beginning at 12 p.m.

Improving your golf game could change a child's life

ATLANTA -- You can help a child recover from abuse and neglect, just by playing a round of golf.

Camp Horizon, a non-profit organization, is holding a golf tournament to benefit children who are in foster care, recovering from abuse.

The Hope on the Horizon golf tournament takes place at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw Monday, Apr. 22 at 10 a.m. There is an entry fee of $125 per player, or $500 per foursome. Participants need to register by Apr. 8.

Organizers say the round of golf will make a big difference. Camp Horizon leaders say 40,000 children in Georgia are victims of abuse; every 13 minutes, a child is victimized. And children who are harmed are six times more likely to continue the cycle of abuse.
