DeKalb CEO welcomes baby girl

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May and his wife Robin welcomed a baby girl Friday morning.

Riley May was born at 8:31 a.m., weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Both mother and daughter are happy and healthy.

"I give thanks to God for all of His generous blessings," May said in a statement. "I want to thank everyone for their kind sentiments and prayers."

Riley joins big sisters Ryann and Reagan.

Fernbank's 97 Days of Play begins May 31

ATLANTA -- Fernbank Museum of Natural History is getting ready to kick off its 97 Days of Play series of summertime events.

The fun begins on Saturday, May 31, when the museum will host an Island Adventure Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children who attend Island Adventure Day can learn all about the animals who live in exotic locations around the world. Live animals, including lemurs, will help kids understand more about Madagascar; Fernbank is currently hosting the IMAX film Island of Lemurs: Madagascar.

Other scheduled activities include a DJ spinning island tunes, a shell scavenger hunt, limbo and hula-hoop contests, and a craft that allows children to make their own fish scales out of colorful tissue paper.

Island Adventure Day is free to attend for Fernbank members and included in admission price for non-members. Learn more at fernbankmuseum.org.

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

(WXIA) -- Youth running groups, rejoice -- the Atlanta Track Club has created a scholarship program just for you.

The Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge will award scholarships to the three organizations that have the most children registered for the 2014 Peachtree Jr. or Lil' Peach Dash.

The first place team will be given a $1,500 scholarship, a $1,250 cash donation from the Atlanta Track Club and $250 in Sports Authority store credit. Two runners-up will each get $750 scholarships, $500 donations and $250 in Sports Authority credit.

"Through the Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge, we are able to give back to organizations that share our goal of inspiring children to be healthier and more active," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah said in a release. "Atlanta Track Club is proud to partner with Sports Authority to offer these scholarships to provide extra motivation to keep kids moving."

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.

Seamless Summer program feeds children when school is out

Seamless Summer program feeds children when school is out

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Education will once again offer its Seamless Summer nutrition program when school lets out for the year.

Seamless Summer provides free meals to children under the age of 18. No registration or income verification is required to receive the food.

According to the GDOE, more than 77 percent of the 500,000 breakfasts and 1.1 million lunches it serves during the school year are provided for free or at a reduced price. Georgia ranks in the top five nationwide for states with children who participate in the School Breakfast Program and/or National School Lunch Program.

In the past, more than 2,200 locations across Georgia have served meals through the Seamless Summer program.

Path2College launches savings sweepstakes

Path2College launches savings sweepstakes

(WXIA) -- Path2College, Georgia's 529 savings plan, has kicked off this year's $25,000 Reasons to Save Sweepstakes.

The promotion is designed to get parents thinking about saving for college while their children are still young.

Through the sweepstakes, one lucky child will be awarded $15,000 for his or her college education. The winner's school will receive $10,000.

"All you have to do is go online and enter for a chance to win," Path2College exeuctive director Mitch Seabaugh said. "There's nothing to lose by entering, and both a child and his or her school have a lot to gain."

To enter, visit path2college529.com. The sweepstakes is open to current Path2College 529 Plan account owners or non-account owners who live in Georgia and are at least 21 years old.

The contest closes on Sunday, Aug. 10.
