DeKalb spring sports registration opens

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Registration for one adult and two youth sports in DeKalb County is now open.

Youth Soccer

Soccer is for children ages 4-14. The season includes eight games. Registration ranges in price from $45 to $85 per child and closes Monday, Feb. 16.

DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May said the county's soccer program is designed to instill skill development, fitness and team training drills.

Sign up at any DeKalb recreation center or dekalbcountyga.gov.

Adult Softball

DeKalb County offers both men's and co-ed softball leagues. The season begins in March and includes 10 regular games. Registration closes Monday, Feb. 23.

The cost is $420 per team. An additional $20 will be added for each non-DeKalb County resident.

ATLANTA -- A race benefiting Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute will be held on Emory's campus this weekend.

Winship Win the Fight 5K has already reached its fundraising goal of $500,000, but runners can still sign up in person (online registration is closed). It costs $30 to register.

The race will be Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8:30 a.m. It will begin and end at McDonough Field; free parking is available in the Peavine and Michael Street decks.

Orangetheory fitness to open Roswell studio

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Orangetheory Fitness will open several more studios in metro Atlanta this year.

The group exercise concept will debut its seventh Atlanta-area location in Roswell next month. The new Orangetheory will be located in the Roswell Crossing shopping center on West Crossville Road.

"We know this community will embrace this new fitness concept. Roswell has strong community support and pride," Cindy Hirsch, co-owner of the new studio, said in a release. Cindy and her husband Gary plan to open another Orangetheory studio in Suwanee in the fall. Other locations scheduled to open later this summer include Alpharetta and Druid Hills.

Orangetheory Fitness members engage in high-intensity cardio and strength training sessions. According to the company, each workout burns between 500 and 900 calories, and results in a metabolic increase that continues to burn calories for up to 36 hours.

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

(WXIA) -- Youth running groups, rejoice -- the Atlanta Track Club has created a scholarship program just for you.

The Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge will award scholarships to the three organizations that have the most children registered for the 2014 Peachtree Jr. or Lil' Peach Dash.

The first place team will be given a $1,500 scholarship, a $1,250 cash donation from the Atlanta Track Club and $250 in Sports Authority store credit. Two runners-up will each get $750 scholarships, $500 donations and $250 in Sports Authority credit.

"Through the Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge, we are able to give back to organizations that share our goal of inspiring children to be healthier and more active," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah said in a release. "Atlanta Track Club is proud to partner with Sports Authority to offer these scholarships to provide extra motivation to keep kids moving."

AJC Peachtree Road Race registration is open!

ATLANTA -- It's that time of year again -- time to register for the world's largest 10K.

AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery registration is now open. It will close Saturday, Mar. 22 at 11:59 p.m.

Those who are chosen for the race will be informed by Tuesday, Mar. 25.

Race next weekend: Red Devil Dash

ATLANTA -- Celebrate the first day of March with a 5K and 1-mile race to benefit student-athletes at Druid Hills High School.

The Red Devil Dash will be held Saturday, Mar. 1 at Druid Hills Middle School. Race day registration opens at 7:45 a.m., while the runs will start at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1-mile run. After Feb. 27, prices increase to $30 for the 5K and $20 for the 1-mile run. Proceeds from both races will benefit the Philip Hicks Memorial Sportsmanship Awards at Druid Hills High.
